What Rio does, and doesn’t do.
Your security plan covers a lot. Rio handles the network part.
| Topic | Rio handles it | Still on you |
|---|---|---|
| Client data | Client computers walled off in their own room | Encrypting files and keeping backups |
| Device access | New devices wait for your approval | Strong logins and multifactor authentication |
| Your WISP | Doesn’t write your security plan | Writing it and keeping it current |
| Compliance | Doesn’t make you compliant or certify you | Meeting FTC, IRS and state rules |
Rio’s Wi-Fi uses WPA2 Personal, with a separate password per room. IRS Publication 4557 suggests WPA3.
Rio VPN protects the rooms you switch it on for. It is not a remote-access tool for reaching office files.

Does the FTC Safeguards Rule apply to me?
If you prepare tax returns, yes: the rule names accountants and tax preparers who complete returns. For bookkeepers and fractional CFOs, it depends on your services and clients, so ask your adviser. Firms with under 5,000 consumers skip a few parts, not the written plan.
Does Rio make me compliant?
No, and no router can. Your written security plan covers people, policies, logins, encryption and more. Rio handles the network part: a walled-off room for client data, device approval and guest Wi-Fi you can describe in that plan.
What does the IRS expect from my network?
The sample plan in IRS Publication 5708 keeps guest Wi-Fi on a separate network and reviews new devices before they join. Rio does both. Publication 4557 also suggests WPA3 Wi-Fi. Rio uses WPA2 Personal, with a password per room.
What if client data is stolen?
Tell your IRS Stakeholder Liaison right away so the IRS can help protect your clients’ returns. If the FTC rule covers you and 500 or more consumers are affected, report it to the FTC as soon as possible, and no later than 30 days after you find it.
What does Rio cost?
$199.99, including 1 year of Rio VPN. After that, Rio VPN is optional at $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Shipping is free, and Rio comes with 30-day returns and a 1-year warranty.
