Which router is best for you?
Rio: strong defaults, no networking skills needed
New devices wait in the app until you approve them. SecureRooms put the kids' tablets, the smart TV and your work laptop on separate networks. Rio VPN covers the rooms you pick. The trade-offs: Wi-Fi 6 and WPA2, and fewer expert controls.
eero: the easiest way to cover a big home
eero's mesh is simple to expand. Free features include a guest network, device blocking and new-device alerts. Ad blocking, threat protection and the VPN app need eero Plus.
Firewalla: the most visibility, no subscription
Firewalla shows what every device is doing and lets you write rules about it. You get quarantine, VLANs and a VPN server with no monthly fee. Expect more settings, and Orange Wi-Fi rated for about 50 clients.
Ubiquiti: the most control for the money
UniFi offers full VLANs, intrusion prevention and room to add access points. It's excellent if you know networking. Getting segmentation right is up to you.
Do you need a subscription for router security?

Which router is the most secure for a home?
There's no single winner. Rio puts strong defaults first, with device approval, separate SecureRooms and a firewall on from day one. Firewalla and Ubiquiti offer more control for people willing to configure them. eero is the strongest pick for mesh coverage, with security extras through eero Plus.
Do I need a subscription for router security?
It depends on the brand. Rio's firewall, device approval and SecureRooms need none, and Rio VPN is optional after year one at $7.99 a month. eero's extras need eero Plus at $9.99 a month. Firewalla has no subscription. Ubiquiti's core is free, with an optional $99 a year add-on.
Is eero or Rio better for a large home?
If coverage is your main problem, a mesh system such as eero is the stronger choice, since you can add units to reach every room. Rio is built to control who joins your network and keep devices apart. Pick based on whether reach or control matters more in your home.
What is device approval on a router?
Device approval means a new device can't join your network just because it has the Wi-Fi password. It waits until you approve it. On Rio, new devices wait in the app. Firewalla offers a similar feature called New Device Quarantine, and eero can pause unknown devices.
Does Rio VPN cover every device on my network?
It covers every device in the SecureRooms you assign to it, including TVs and consoles that can't run a VPN app. Devices in other rooms use your normal connection. It's an outbound privacy VPN, not a way to reach your home network remotely.
