Meet Rio 2.0: the all-new Rio app

The new Rio 2.0 app: Home, Devices and Rooms screens

Rio was built to stop hackers at the front door of your home network. Now the app you use every day is just as good as the protection behind it. Rio 2.0 is a complete rebuild of the Rio app, not a facelift, and it's available now as a free update on iPhone and Android.

Here's what's new, and why it matters for your home.

See everything at a glance

Home now shows your protection status, how many devices are connected, which ones are waiting for your approval, and which are blocked, with every device grouped by network. A green "Connected" badge tells you the app can reach your Rio. If your internet ever goes down, Home says so plainly and gives you two buttons: run diagnostics or restart your router.

Control anything in a tap

Approve a new device before it gets on your Wi-Fi, and block anything you don't recognize. Move, rename or remove a device in a tap. When guests visit, share your Wi-Fi with a QR code instead of reading out a long password.

Keep devices in their own rooms

SecureRooms keep your devices apart. If a camera or smart plug is ever compromised, it can't reach the laptops and phones in your other rooms. Rio 2.0 brings all your rooms into one tab with quick filters, and one tap adds six recommended rooms: Cameras & Monitors, Smart Home, Appliances & Printers, Kids, Entertainment, and Guests. Rename or delete any of them. Rio never creates rooms unless you ask.

VPN, room by room

Turn on Rio VPN for a whole room, including devices that can't run a VPN app of their own, like smart TVs and game consoles. The VPN tab shows exactly which rooms are covered, and labels are honest: a room without a tunnel says "VPN Off". If you don't have Rio VPN yet, the VPN tab explains what it does and how to add it.

Light or dark, your choice

The whole app now comes in light and dark mode. It follows your phone automatically, or you can pick a side in Settings. There's also a quick sun and moon switch right on Home.

Built to be dependable

We rebuilt Rio 2.0 on a modern foundation, so it runs on the latest iPhones and Android phones, including iOS 27 and Android 16. We fixed more than 50 bugs from a full audit of the old app, and more than 200 automated tests now check every release. You'll see fewer spinners and clearer messages that tell you what went wrong and what to do about it.

The app is also easier for everyone to use, with higher-contrast colors, screen-reader labels and better support for large text.

Nothing to set up again

If you already have Rio, just update the app. Your networks, rooms, devices and settings carry over, and you stay signed in. Updating customers get a short tour of what's new. Setting up a new Rio? The app walks you through it step by step.

A few things moved

  • The Admin and Managed tabs now live in the Rooms tab. Use the filters at the top.
  • Dashboard is now Home, and System is now Settings.
  • The support button moved to Settings > Help & Support.
  • The speed test has been removed. You can check your speed at speedtest.net or fast.com.

Get Rio 2.0

Update the Rio Router app from the App Store or Google Play. It's free for every Rio owner. Rio 2.0 works on iPhone with iOS 15.5 or later and on Android 7.0 or later.
